Saliva vs Urine Drug Tests: Which Should Your Business Buy in Bulk?

If you buy drug testing kits by the carton, choosing between saliva and urine affects far more than the price on the invoice. It changes how your testing days run, what facilities you need, how easy the test is to cheat and, most importantly, what a result actually tells you.

This guide is for employers setting up a workplace testing programme, occupational health providers supplying several client sites and resellers deciding what to stock. We compare detection windows, sample collection, cost per test and which type suits pre-employment versus post-incident testing, along with four of our most popular wholesale drug testing kits.

The short answer

Neither sample type is better across the board. They answer slightly different questions.

  • Saliva tests show recent use, usually within the last day or two, and can be collected anywhere under direct observation. They are the natural fit for post-incident, reasonable cause and on-site random testing.
  • Urine tests look further back, usually several days, cover a wider range of drugs and cost less per test. They are the go-to for pre-employment and routine screening.

Plenty of businesses end up stocking both and using each one for the job it does best.

Detection windows are a guide only. They vary with the amount taken, how often someone uses, their metabolism and the cut-off level of the test.

Detection windows: what each sample can tell you

This is the biggest practical difference between the two, and it is worth getting clear on before you place an order.

Saliva picks up drugs in their original form, often very soon after use. Because they clear from oral fluid fairly quickly, the window is short. On our UKDrugTesting saliva barrel kits, cannabis is detectable for around 12 hours, cocaine for 1 to 2 days, amphetamines and benzodiazepines for 1 to 3 days, and alcohol for up to around 10 hours.

Urine picks up the breakdown products (metabolites) the body makes as it processes a drug. These build up in urine and stay there longer, so the window is wider. On our UKDrugTesting urine cups, cocaine is detectable for 1 to 3 days, benzodiazepines for up to 4 days, amphetamines for up to 6 days and cannabis for up to 7 days. In regular heavy cannabis users, it can be considerably longer.

There is a trade-off here. The wider window makes urine better at picking up drug use in general, but a positive result does not tell you exactly when someone used, and on its own it does not show they were under the influence at work. Saliva's shorter window ties the result more closely to recent use, which is what matters when you need to know whether someone was fit for work at a particular moment.

Check the cut-offs: The number after each drug code on a test, such as THC20 or THC50, is the cut-off level in ng/mL. A lower number means a more sensitive test that picks up smaller amounts. Make sure the cut-offs you buy match those in your drug and alcohol policy, particularly if you test across several sites or clients.

Check detection times with our free calculator

Detection windows vary a lot from one drug to the next, and how often someone uses makes a big difference too. If you want to check the substances your business is most concerned about, try the free drug detection time calculator from UK Drug Testing.

Choose from more than 40 substances, select whether it was one-off or regular use, and pick when it was last taken. The calculator then shows whether it is likely to show up on a urine, saliva, hair or blood test. It also lists typical detection times for every substance, with one-off and regular use shown side by side.

It is a quick way to compare saliva and urine for specific drugs before you decide which tests to order. Occupational health providers and resellers may also find it a useful link to share with clients who ask how far back a test can see. Just bear in mind the figures are typical estimates, so they cannot predict the result of an individual test.

How the sample is collected

Saliva collection is simple. The donor holds the swab in their mouth until enough oral fluid has been collected, the swab goes into the barrel and the result appears in around 10 minutes. Everything happens in front of the collector, so there is very little opportunity to swap or dilute the sample. You do not need a toilet or a private room, which is why saliva works so well in depots, on construction sites, at the roadside and anywhere else facilities are limited. Most instructions ask the donor not to eat, drink or smoke for 10 minutes beforehand.

Urine collection needs a toilet, and because the sample is given in private there is more scope for tampering. Diluting with water and substituting someone else's sample are the most common problems. Good quality integrated cups help here with a built-in temperature strip, which shows whether the sample is at body temperature, and on selected models, specimen validity tests that check for oxidising agents, abnormal pH and dilution.

It also helps to know the difference between urine cups and urine test cards. With an integrated cup, the test strips sit inside a sealed cup, so the donor hands back a closed container and the collector never handles open urine. The sealed sample can also be sent on to a laboratory if it needs confirming. With a multi-panel test card, the card is dipped into a collected sample. Cards cost less but involve a little more handling.

Cost per test: comparing four bulk options

All four options below are sold in full cartons of 25 individually foil-wrapped tests, which makes the cost per test easy to work out.

Product Sample Panels Carton of 25 (from) Cost per test (from) Best suited to
UKDrugTesting Multi Panel Urine Kits Urine (test card) 4 to 10 £25 £1.00 High-volume screening and resale
ALLTEST Integrated Urine Cup Urine (cup) 7 to 21 £70 £2.80 Pre-employment and adulteration checks
UKDrugTesting Urine Cup Urine (cup) 13 or 23 £80 £3.20 Wide drug coverage at sensitive cut-offs
UKDrugTesting Saliva Barrel Kits Saliva 7 to 12, including alcohol £90 £3.60 Post-incident, random and on-site testing

On paper, urine test cards win easily on price. But the cheapest test is not always the cheapest result. Think about how long your collectors spend on each test, whether you have toilet facilities on site, how many samples you could lose to tampering and what it costs to send non-negative results to a laboratory for confirmation. For a post-incident test at a remote site, a £3.60 saliva test you can carry out on the spot is often better value than a £1 card that needs a toilet you do not have.

Pre-employment testing: why urine is usually the better fit

Pre-employment tests are planned. The candidate knows roughly when they will be tested, and some will stop using a few days beforehand in the hope of passing. The longer detection window of a urine test makes that much harder and gives you a clearer picture of the days leading up to the test.

Other reasons urine tends to suit recruitment:

  • Testing usually takes place at an office or clinic, so toilet facilities are available
  • Wider panels mean you can screen for prescription drugs, ketamine and newer substances in one test
  • A lower cost per test helps when you are recruiting in volume, such as seasonal warehouse or agency staff
  • Integrated cups with temperature and adulteration checks reduce the chance of a tampered sample slipping through

For most employers, an integrated cup such as the ALLTEST 10 or 13 panel with adulteration screening or the UKDrugTesting 13 panel cup is a sensible starting point. If you are testing large numbers on a tight budget, the 10 panel workplace test card keeps costs down.

Saliva still has a place in recruitment, particularly when new starters are tested on site at induction with no toilet nearby, or when you want alcohol included in the same test.

Post-incident and reasonable cause testing: why saliva usually wins

After an accident or near miss, the question changes. You want to know whether drugs or alcohol may have played a part in what has just happened, not whether someone used something last weekend.

  • Saliva reflects recent use, which is more relevant to someone's condition at the time of the incident
  • The test can be done at the scene, straight away, without waiting for access to a toilet
  • Collection is fully observed, so the result is harder to challenge on the grounds of tampering
  • Our saliva barrel kits screen for alcohol at the same time, which is often just as important as drugs after an incident
  • It is quicker and less intrusive for an employee who may already be shaken

The same thinking applies to reasonable cause testing, where a manager has concerns about someone's behaviour on shift. Speed matters in both situations, so it pays to keep a supply of saliva kits at each site rather than in a central office.

Urine can still be used after an incident, and some policies require it. Just bear in mind that a positive urine result may reflect use several days earlier, so on its own it is harder to link to the incident itself.

What about random testing?

Random testing works with either sample. Saliva is the more practical choice for unannounced testing on site in safety-critical roles such as rail, construction, transport and utilities, because it can be done anywhere in a few minutes. Urine casts a wider net and works well as a deterrent where testing takes place at a fixed location. Many organisations use saliva for random and post-incident tests, and urine for pre-employment and periodic medicals. Our guide to bulk drug testing kits for companies has more on setting up a workplace programme.

Advice for occupational health providers

If you supply testing across several client contracts, it usually makes sense to keep both sample types in stock. A few things worth building into your process:

  • Match the panels and cut-offs to each client's drug and alcohol policy, as these can vary between sectors
  • Use cups with temperature and adulteration checks wherever a result could lead to disciplinary action
  • Rotate stock and keep an eye on expiry dates, as you would with any rapid diagnostic test
  • Make sure collectors are trained. Our one-hour online drug test training is a good place for new staff to start
  • Agree a route for sending non-negative samples to an accredited laboratory for confirmation

Drug and alcohol testing often sits alongside medicals and health surveillance, so it can save time to source your equipment from the same supplier. Our wholesale Valuemed range includes sphygmomanometers, stethoscopes, reflex hammers and tuning forks for hand-arm vibration screening. If you only need a few items, you can buy direct from Valuemed.

You can find more of what we supply to the sector on our occupational health supplies page.

Buying in bulk for resale

For resellers, pharmacies and online sellers, both types sell well, but to slightly different customers. Multi-panel urine kits are the most affordable entry point and suit home and consumer testing. Saliva kits and integrated cups appeal more to small businesses and trade buyers looking for a workplace-ready product.

Because every test in a carton is individually foil-wrapped, cartons are easy to split into smaller packs. If you sell on Amazon, our FBA barcode labelling service can get stock labelled and ready for fulfilment. There is more information for trade buyers on our resellers and small businesses page.

Remember: Saliva and urine rapid tests are screening tests. Any non-negative result should be treated as presumptive and confirmed by an accredited laboratory before any disciplinary action is taken.

Frequently asked questions

Do saliva tests detect cannabis as well as urine tests?
They detect recent cannabis use, usually within around 12 hours on our kits. Urine detects it for much longer, up to 7 days or more. If you want to pick up use over the past few days, urine is more sensitive. If you want to know about very recent use, saliva is more relevant.

Do urine drug tests detect alcohol?
The urine cups and test cards featured in this guide do not include an alcohol panel. If you need to test for drugs and alcohol together, our saliva barrel kits include alcohol as standard.

What is the minimum order?
Wholesale prices on ADTUK are for full cartons of 25 tests with a minimum of 500-1,000 units. If you only need a few, the same tests are available in smaller quantities from UK Drug Testing.

How accurate are rapid drug tests?
The tests featured here quote accuracy of around 98% or higher compared with laboratory methods. They are still screening tests, so non-negative results always need laboratory confirmation.

Final thoughts

If you are only going to buy one type, start with the testing you will do most often. Recruiting regularly and testing at a fixed location? Urine gives you the wider window and the lower cost per test. Testing on site, after incidents or in safety-critical roles? Saliva gives you a fast, observed result that reflects recent use. For most businesses with a full drug and alcohol policy, having both on the shelf is the most practical answer.
